BIOGRAPHY

Joe A. Avarista studied photography at the Art Institute of Boston. He subsequently served a nine year apprenticeship with a master wood sculptor. A life-long fascination with clothing led him to design and execute a series of sculptures of jackets, ballet slippers and chef outfits. These pieces are then painted by the sculptor to take on a super realistic appearance. In addition he has carved life-sized figures, including sports legends, Native Americans and historic personages such as Thomas Wilson Dorr, leader of the Dorr Rebellion in nineteenth century Rhode Island. This last was commissioned for the Heritage Harbor Museum in Rhode Island.

His work is currently exhibited at the Royal Gallery in Providence, Rhode Island and Vail Village Arts in Vail and Beaver Creek, Colorado.
